Bergen
Bergen
is in a stunningly picturesque harbour-setting surrounded by seven big
mountains. It is a charming town full of atmosphere, with many coloured
wooden buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The city
was founded in 1066 and was part of the german Hanseatic league from the
14th to 18th centruries. The bryggen harbour area is on the UNESCO World
Heritage list. |

The
historic harbourside (Bryggen)) wooden buildings were destroyed in 1702
by fire (again) but were rebuilt on the 11th century foundations. Preserved
and protected, this is no museum but very much a living community of shops,
offices, workshops and restaurants.
Bergen has several impressive art collections and music for all tastes. The home of Edvard Grieg is 8km south of the town centre. There is a funicular railway from the town centre to the top of Mount Floyen and a cable car to the highest mountain Ulriken for stunning panaramic views. Fantoft Stave church was originally built in Sogn in 1150 and moved to Fantoft in 1883. It was burnt down in 1992 but has been rebuilt as before. |

Bergen
is the southern terminus for the famous Hurtigruta coastal cruise ships
that sail up the coast and around north cape. To the north is Sogne
fjord, with Hardanger
to the south. The Flam
railway is two hours to the east. The fjord and mountain setting make Bergen spectacular, but can also lead to some traffic problems at times, although an on-going program of tunnel-building is helping. There are ferries to England, Denmark, Shetland and Faeroes and Flesland airport is to the south west of the city. Hotel booking in the Bergen area Information on the Bergen area |
