Hemsedal Norway
Hemsedal is known as the scandinavian alps - with the maximum drop of over 800 metres
and the longest slope being 4 km from the top of the main (8 seat) express chairlift.
This resort is well run - by Skistar of Sweden - and has good facilities. With a wide range of slopes for all abilities and almost guaranteed snow
conditions through a long winter season, it is a popular resort.
One of the special attractions of Hemsedal for families is the barnehage (kindergarten - nursery) called Trollia
right in the slopes which was fantastic until last year, when Gaupeland came along as an outdoor
nursery / play area / ski school for little ones on the nursery slopes - but without toilet facilities, and run by
ski instructors who were outnumbered for a babysitting role while also trying to teach skiing skills. Trollia was still there, but almost empty.
For the 2009-10 season Gaupeland was supposed to be further developed, probably replacing Trollia...
We hope they get it right, because 2008-9 was a bit of a shambles.
Hemsedal IS a family-friendly resort, but is also popular with others - there is a lively night scene - so make sure you check which group your accommodation is aimed at.
There are several hotels, many apartment complexes, and hyttes (cottages) - most of which are controlled by Skistar.
